How close were we to a deadly pandemic in January of this year? According to several published sources, we were teetering on the brink. That's because seasonal flu vaccines manufactured by US-based pharmaceutical company Baxter International had been contaminated with the deadly avian flu virus called H5N1.1 The contaminated vaccine made by a Baxter facility in Orth-Donau, Austria was shipped to numerous distributors in Austria, Germany, Slowenia, and the Czech Republic. Were it not for the good sense of a lab in the Czech Republic that inoculated ferrets with the serum to check its safety, we might now be facing a global pandemic of avian flu -- of which there is a 60% mortality rate.2 The fact that the ferrets died soon after they were given the vaccine raised a red flag to scientists and government authorities. Ferrets do not die when exposed to seasonal flu viruses. What makes this situation even more chilling is that the avian flu virus by itself does not easily infect people. But when mixed with an easily transmissible strain like the seasonal flu virus, the hybrid strain can be just as contagious. How could Baxter have let this happen? Was it intentional as some people believe? Even the respected Dr. Mercola has his suspicions.4 A pandemic would certainly trigger a worldwide demand for the avian flu vaccine. Baxter happens to be one of only six international companies licensed to develop flu vaccines. If a pandemic occurred...well, you can do the math in terms of profits to be made. The other possibility is that Baxter was not following its own stringent biosafety protocol to prevent cross-contamination of infectious materials. This protocol, called Biosafety Level 3 (BSL3), if followed, makes it virtually impossible for a situation like this to occur.2 Could a major pharmaceutical company really be so careless in handling an infectious agent that could possibly kill tens of millions of people? If so, should they even be allowed to remain in business? The human race can't afford mistakes of this magnitude. Not surprisingly, Baxter has said little on the subject. Christopher Bona, Baxter's Director of Global Bioscience Communications said the cross-contamination occurred as "the result of a combination of just the process itself, (and) technical and human error in this procedure."3 He declined to say more because he did not want to reveal proprietary secrets about their production process. (If anyone wants to steal that kind of production process, they should be first in line for one of Baxter's vaccines.) We can only pray that Baxter doesn't get off the hook with such a vague excuse. They would like nothing better than for this story to just go away so that the American public, which is already skittish about vaccines, doesn't rise up in total revolt against them. And sadly enough, the Western media seem to be helping them in keeping the story quiet. Has anyone really heard much about this terrifying near miss from the major news outlets in the US? Do we know if any Baxter employee or executive will be held accountable? Most importantly, can we be assured that this kind of mistake (if it was a mistake) can't and won't happen again? Czech newspapers are questioning whether the shocking discovery of vaccines contaminated with the deadly avian flu virus -- distributed to 18 countries by the American company Baxter -- were part of a conspiracy to provoke a pandemic. Because of laboratory protocols that are routine for vaccine makers, mixing a live virus biological weapon with vaccine material by accident is virtually impossible. Baxter flu vaccines contaminated with H5N1 (the human form of avian flu) were received by labs in the Czech Republic, Germany and Slovenia. Initially, Baxter refused to reveal how the vaccines were contaminated with H5N1, invoking "trade secrets". After increased pressure, they then claimed that pure H5N1 batches were sent by accident. But in the Czech Republic, reporters are investigating whether the contamination was part of a deliberate attempt to start a pandemic. The fact that Baxter mixed the deadly H5N1 virus with a mix of H3N2 seasonal flu viruses may be the smoking gun. The H5N1 virus on its own has killed hundreds of people, but it is less airborne. However, when combined with seasonal flu viruses, which are more easily spread, the effect could be a potent, airborne, deadly biological weapon. Sources: http://PrisonPlanet.com March 5, 2009 Dr. Mercola's Comments: Last month vaccine maker Baxter International sent a mix of flu vaccine and unlabelled H5N1 virus (the human form of bird flu) to an Austrian research company. Expecting the shipment to contain only flu vaccine, the Austrian company then sent portions of the contaminated product to the Czech Republic, Slovenia and Germany. It was only when researchers at a Czech Republic laboratory injected ferrets with the vaccine, and they unexpectedly died, that the contamination mistake was discovered. But is "mistake" really an accurate term to describe this? If this batch of live bird flu and seasonal flu viruses had reached the public, it could have resulted in dire consequences. Even though H5N1 doesn't easily infect people, the flu virus does. So if people were exposed to both of these viruses, they would have become hosts for the combined viruses, and would have become highly contagious and able to transmit the deadly bird flu virus to others. There is actually a name for this mixing of viruses; it's called "reassortment" and even The Canadian Press has pointed out that it is one of two ways pandemic viruses are created. Could the Contamination Have Been a Plot to Start a Deadly Pandemic? A spokesman for Baxter said the virus material was supposed to contain a seasonal flu virus and was contaminated after "human error". Yet, other sources say Baxter International adheres to something called BSL3 (Biosafety Level 3). This strict set of laboratory safety protocols is in place to prevent the cross-contamination of materials, and according to some may have made it virtually impossible for the live bird flu virus to contaminate a flu vaccine by accident. Czech newspapers are among those questioning whether this was a deliberate act to start a pandemic, and there's even been talk of plans to use the vaccines to carry out a form of population control. But then there's the issue of motive. Would Baxter have had any reason to carry out such a malicious and deadly scheme? Well, if a bird flu pandemic suddenly broke out, the demand for bird flu vaccines would certainly skyrocket -- and the profits from such a mass vaccination program would be astronomical. Does the Past Give us Any Clues? You may be thinking that such a conspiracy is too far-fetched to be accurate. But it is worth mentioning that some scientists say the most recent global outbreak -- the 1977 Russian flu -- was started by a virus leaked from a laboratory. Further, drug companies are certainly not best known for their sterling moral values. In 2006, for instance, it came out that the drug company Bayer sold millions of dollars worth of an injectable blood-clotting medicine to Asian, Latin American, and some European countries in the mid-1980s, even though they knew it was tainted with the AIDS virus. So while it is unthinkable that a drug company

virus, it is How to Prevent All Flus, Even the "Deadly Ones", Without Vaccinations Whether or not the conspiracy theory is true, this whole scenario brings up two very important points: 1. Vaccines can be contaminated with dangerous

Remember back in 2005, when headlines warned that the U.S. was facing a cataclysmic extermination event, with a calculated 2 million Americans succumbing to the bird flu, and the best-case scenario taking only 200,000 lives? The case of "the impending pandemic of the Avian Flu" might as well have been a fictional mini-series, as it never materialized. What was really going on was a scenario filled with greed and political corruption. By igniting fear in the public and massaging some key statistics, the powers-that-be were able to justify the expense of a massive vaccine stockpile to ward off the bird flu. At $100 per dose, the United States used taxpayers's dollars to purchase some 20 million doses of the highly questionable Tamiflu, lining the pockets of then Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld who was president of Gilead Sciences when they created the drug. For now, my point is that there are always going to be threats of flu pandemics, real or created, and there will always be potentially toxic vaccines that are peddled as the solution. But you can break free of that whole drug-solution trap by following some natural health principles. I have not caught the flu in 20 years, and you can avoid it too, without getting vaccinated, by following these simple guidelines, which will keep your immune system in optimal working order so that you're far less likely to acquire the infection to begin with.

************** 10-26-09 Dear Reader, How many boys will die? That's the elephant in the FDA's living room. How many boys will die? American parents... brace yourselves FDA officials followed the recent recommendation of their Gardasil panel and approved the vaccine for all young men, ages 9 to 26, to prevent genital warts. Thousands of pediatricians will immediately begin recommending the shot for boys. "Not to worry!" they'll tell you. The FDA says everything is okay. Never mind that genital warts can be avoided by practicing safe sex. (Of course, you can't assume your 9-year-old will remember to use a condom.) Never mind that the long term efficacy and safety of the vaccine is unknown. Never mind that the FDA has received more than 15,000 adverse event reports for Gardasil use among girls. Those reports include more than 1,000 severe reactions and 27 confirmed deaths. Never mind that some of the boys who received Gardasil in trials still developed genital warts. Never mind that the round of three shots required for "protection" will cost around $500. Never mind all that. Just line your boys up, America, and allow Merck executives to collect millions of your dollars. And remember: If your boy has a seizure and dies after receiving a Gardasil shot, that's just a coincidence. Bad need... Merck very much needed this FDA approval to promote Gardasil for boys. Two reasons. 1) Last year, Gardasil revenues were down (likely due to the vaccine's growing reputation as unnecessary and potentially dangerous). And 2) Competition. The FDA is considering approval of Cervarix, another HPV vaccine that's already in use in many countries. Unlike Gardasil, Cervarix does not block HPV strains that cause genital warts. So the FDA approval for Gardasil use in boys is a significant boost. But not so fast... Jane Kim, Ph.D., of Harvard recently conducted a study that weighed the Gardasil benefits for boys against cost data and population studies. Result: The vaccine is not cost-effective for use in boys. Obviously, there are much better ways to spend our health care dollars. Dr. Kim was quick to point out to Reuters Health that her results don't suggest that the FDA should withhold approval. Heavens no! We wouldn't want to offend Merck or the FDA. She adds that the vaccine is new, so all the health benefits may not yet be known. Hilarious! As the adverse event reports continue to mount, we'll be sure to keep a sharp lookout for all the additional health benefits from this no-win drug. And please feel free to forward this e-mail along to any parents you know who might be considering this vaccine for their daughters or sons. ************** Don't Panic: 7 FACTS About 'Swine Flu' With all the sensationalized news about the so-called swine flu flying around, I figured we'd better set all the facts straight. 1. So far, only 82 cases of so-called swine flu have been definitively identified worldwide, mostly in Mexico (26 confirmed, 7 deaths) and the U.S.(with 40 confirmed, no deaths). (Though about 1600 suspected cases, including 159 deaths, are reported in Mexico.) That does not add up to a pandemic swine flu outbreak. 2. This virus has nothing to do with swine. In fact, it hasn't been seen in a single animal. And you can't possibly get it from eating pork. 3. No existing vaccines can prevent this new flu strain. So no matter what you hear – even if it comes from your doctor – don't get a regular flu shot. They rarely work against seasonal flu…and certainly can't offer protection from a never-before- seen strain. 4. Speaking of this strain, it doesn't seem to have come on naturally. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), this particular strain has never before been seen in pigs or people. And according to Reuters, the strain is a 'genetic mix' of swine, avian and human flu. Was it created in a lab? We don't know yet. 5. The drug companies are getting excited…and that's never a good thing. According to the Associated Press at least one financial analyst estimates up to $388 million worth of Tamiflu sales in the near future – and that's without a pandemic outbreak. 6. Let's not forget that Tamiflu comes with its own problems, including side effects like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, dizziness, fatigue, cough…the very symptoms you're trying to avoid. And let's not forget that Japan banned this drug for children back in 2007, after links to suicidal behavior. 7. Vaccines for this flu strain probably won't have to jump through all those annoying hurdles like clinical trials for safety and effectiveness. That won't, however, stop the government from mandating the vaccine for all of us – a very likely scenario. And if the vaccines are actually harmful…killing people, for example…the vaccine makers will be immune from lawsuits. Your best defense – your only real defense in any flu season – is a bulletproof immune system. Madison Cavanaugh, author of "The One-Minute Cure: The Secret to Healing Virtually All Diseases" has a message of hope, however. She insists that the fear is incorrectly placed on the swine influenza virus itself. "Microbes, germs, harmful bacteria and viruses, such as the swine influenza virus, do not cause disease in and of themselves," Cavanaugh states. "They do seek their natural habitat -- such as an oxygen-deficient body -- rather than being the CAUSE of the disease. It's no different from the way mosquitoes seek out stagnant water, but do not cause the pool to become stagnant." Cavanaugh's assertion is consistent with the findings of Dr. Rudolf Virchow (1821 - 1902), also called the "Father of Pathology." It is also supported by Louis Pasteur, the notable 19th century French chemist and microbiologist best known for his remarkable breakthroughs in the causes and prevention of disease, who recanted his germ theory of disease at his deathbed, stating, "The microbe is nothing. The terrain is everything." The terrain of which Pasteur spoke refers to an oxygenated environment in the human body, which makes for a strong immune system. A weakened or suppressed state of the immune system only occurs when the human body lacks oxygen, thereby allowing viruses, such as the swine influenza virus, to breed. It therefore stands to reason that the swine flu virus does not CAUSE disease, but rather seeks out an environment where it can thrive best -- and that is in oxygen-deprived bodies. "A sufficiently oxygenated body is uninhabitable by disease," Cavanaugh states, and viruses can neither survive nor thrive in it. Therefore, the best defense against microbes, germs, harmful bacteria and viruses, such as the swine flu virus, is to keep the body oxygenated." Just ask executives for Pfizer, the world's largest drug maker. Two years ago, the government of Nigeria charged Pfizer execs with homicide and other criminal counts. The legal action also sought about $9 billion in restitution and damages. The charges stem from one of the most shocking chapters in drug company history. In 1996, Pfizer conducted a trial of the antibiotic Trovan on Nigerian children with meningitis. Nigerian authorities say the trial, in which 11 children died, was conducted illegally. Pfizer claimed that the children died of meningitis -- not from side effects of the drug -- and that the trial was conducted with the knowledge of the government. About two years after the fatal trial, the FDA approved Trovan for sale in the U.S. The following year, the agency severely restricted use of the drug after it was linked to several deaths prompted by severe liver dysfunction. So.. how much do you think you might have to pay to wiggle out of this one? $9 billion? Not even close. Someone at Pfizer will be able to go to the petty cash drawer, count out $75 million, and this problem will just go away. According to the Washington Post, that's the deal that Nigerian authorities have worked out with Pfizer attorneys. And those criminal charges? Can't you guess? Popular OTC weight loss drug Alli and prescription-strength version Xenical are under FDA investigation for liver damage. It turns out that hepatoxicity (a.k.a. liver damage) is among the adverse events reported in connection with these drugs (in fact, hepatitis is actually mentioned in Xenical's prescribing information), and the FDA "plans to look into the potential safety issue". Here's what the FDA is NOT doing: Advising people to stop taking these potentially
dangerous drugs. But that's not the case with FDA-approved and potentially dangerous drugs. Bottom line: Don't wait for the FDA to take real action -- that could be too late. Longtime e-Alert readers might remember Katie Wernecke, the 13-year-old girl who I called my hero in 2005 after she was forcibly separated from her parents and ordered to undergo chemotherapy. And Katie said no. Can you imagine the nerve it took for this very young woman, without her supportive parents by her side, to stare down a team of doctors and nurses and give them a flat "no"? The recent incident with Daniel Hauser reminded me of Katie, but when I went to her blog website I found that it hadn't been updated since early 2007. That seemed odd (and troubling) because Katie and her parents had been fairly consistent about posting reports on her condition. Finally I came across a short piece about Katie on the website for KWCH Television in Wichita, Kansas. Wichita happens to be the home of Bright Spot for Health, a clinic established by Hugh D. Riordan, M.D., who is one of the pioneers of intravenous ascorbic acid (IAA) as a cancer treatment. As I've noted in many e-Alerts, IAA therapy delivers very high doses of vitamin C. To Your Good Health, Jenny Thompson ________________ The swine flu is producing a predictable side effect: an overwhelming desire to profit from the swine flu. Researchers at the University of Maryland injected mice with a lethal level of flu virus, then treated some of the mice with Abatacept, a rheumatoid arthritis drug. The survival rate among the Abatacept-treated mice was about 30 percent higher than the untreated mice. According to Ivanhoe Newswire, "Researchers hope Abatacept will soon become an approved drug for protection against flu." Right. And monkeys will fly out of my homemade submarine. The idea that a rheumatoid arthritis drug could be used to treat flu is the least insane part of this harebrained scheme. Allow me to fill you in on three details Ivanhoe neglected to mention... 1) Side effects. According to the FDA: "Patients taking Orencia [Abatacept's brand name] are at increased risk for developing infections including pneumonia, and other infections caused by viruses, bacteria, or fungi." And: "There have been rare cases of certain kinds of cancer in patients receiving Orencia." Other "common side effects" include headache, sore throat, nausea, and -- no kidding -- upper respiratory tract infection. And this stuff is supposed to REDUCE the effects of flu? 2) Abatacept doesn't come in hard pills or capsules or gel caps or powder -- not even chewable gummies. It's given via intravenous injection. Convenient! And 3) One dose costs a little over $1,400. Thanks guys, but I think I'll just tough out the flu with rest and plenty of liquids -- you know, the kind that don't cost as much as a mortgage payment! For instance, early this month the FDA news Drug Daily Bulletin reported that the agency's Acetaminophen Hepatotoxicity Working Group has produced a "background report" recommending that all drug products containing acetaminophen "carry much stronger warnings about liver toxicity and other dangers." Okay. Got the report in hand. Now what? In two weeks, the group will present the report at a meeting of the "Drug Safety and Risk Management, Anesthetic and Life Support Drugs and Nonprescription Drugs advisory committees." So the report -- already prepared -- will sit in stacks for two more weeks. Then it will be presented to the committees. Then the committees will take a few weeks to ponder what is clearly stated above in a single sentence. And THEN...the committee will offer advice to the agency. And a few weeks later the agency will...what?...probably draw up a list of proposed guidelines. Then the list will...what?...maybe go back to the Working Group to prepare a draft? Then...oh sweet mercy NEVER MIND! Don't you just want to throttle these guys? FDA, you go on ahead and do whatever you do in the mind-numbingly sluggish pace you do it in. Out here in the real world we're already frying the fish you haven't even caught yet. To Your Good Health, Jenny Thompson ________________ 7-16-09 Without ceremony, another best selling, but very dangerous drug was finally taken off the market last month. Roche executives finally pulled Accutane, their notorious acne drug. According to Bloomberg News, juries have awarded more than $33 million in damages against the drug, and thousands of additional lawsuits are in the works. Roche has already pulled Accutane from the market in France, Germany, Spain and more than half-a-dozen other countries. But here's the wrinkle that could only exist in Big Pharma World: Roche is pulling the drug because surging sales of generic versions of Accutane have made it unprofitable. So if you want Accutane, no problem. Only now it's called Accure, Oratane, Isohexal, Amnesteem, Claravis, Sotret, and other brand names, all of which contain the active ingredient isotretinoin. Still very popular, still very dangerous. What was the hold up? It's a pretty familiar story: If isotretinoin were a dietary supplement it would have been banned years ago. In 2006, University of Chicago researchers investigated 85 cases of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that were believed to be related to isotretinoin use (all cases were reported to the FDA between 1997 and 2002). RESULTS: According to a Reuters Health report on this study, "numerous cases have surfaced linking the drug to IBD. Until now, a systematic review of the association had not been conducted." Nice. Accutane was on the market since the first Reagan administration, but we had to wait until 2006 to finally get a thorough review of the IBD link. Chain of events In an e-Alert I sent you a few years ago, I told you about some of the other adverse side effects of Accutane listed on the drug's web site: vision and hearing impairment, psychosis and acute pancreatitis. But by far the most controversial side effect is birth defects. According to the defunct Accutane web site, "There is an extremely high risk that severe birth defects will result if pregnancy occurs while taking Accutane in any amount, even for short periods of time." No gray areas there! And in 2005, the FDA issued a warning that all Accutane users "should be observed closely for symptoms of depression or suicidal thoughts." Of course, all these warnings still apply to generic brands of isotretinoin Cystic acne and nodule acne -- which Accutane is designed to address -- are painful and often disfiguring conditions. But while desperate conditions sometimes call for desperate measures, there is a dietary modification that provides a safe first step for anyone who's coping with acne of any degree. Alternative medicine practitioners and nutritionists like Jonathan V. Wright, M.D., and Adelle Davis have known for years that wheat intake can prompt acne outbreaks. And recent studies confirm that acne thrives when the diet is rich in high glycemic foods. Here's the suspected chain of events: Bread, refined cereals or potatoes are consumed, glucose levels spike, insulin production rises and triggers hormones that secrete sebum in pores of the skin, and the sebum attracts acne-promoting bacteria. Side effects of a low glycemic diet include possible weight loss and a lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes. No need to observe closely for suicidal thoughts. Theo Cherbuliez, President of the Apitherapy Association, was on the boob tube yesterday (6-14-09), saying how in times past, folks used this proven remedy for all sorts of illnesses and dis-ease. For instance, he stated that Charlemagne had his gout treated successfully by bee stings. Can you imagine a Fear & Death Administration back then, telling him he couldn't do that legally because bees are drugs? Jeff Tollefson ________________ 10-23-09 FDA-Approved Gout Drug Could Kill You Gout comes with killer pain... but Colchys, the latest FDA-approved preventive treatment, could really kill you. Knowing that this drug can cause fatal toxic reactions (especially when used at the same time as many common medications) -- even in approved dosages! -- the FDA still approved it. The agency issued a safety alert on July 30 because colchicine (the generic name) could cause death even when taken sporadically for treating acute flare-ups. But still, they gave Colchys the green light as a daily preventive just this week. How deadly is this drug? The FDA found 169 deaths linked with colchicine... including 117 where the people took only the recommended, approved dose. Apparently, Colchys can interact VERY BADLY with many other, very common drugs (like Lipitor, Prilosec, erythromycin, Prozac, and Imodium... just to name a few), increasing the risk of potentially fatal colchine toxicity. On top of that, the potential for non-fatal but still horrific adverse events is pretty big -- the first page of the prescribing information is honestly terrifying: thrombocytopenia, aplastic anemia, neuromuscular toxicity. How any doctor could prescribe such a dangerous drug when there are highly effective, totally safe natural remedies for gout is unthinkable. But you don't have to subject yourself to unreasonable risk to find relief. --Michele Cagan <hsiresearch @ healthiernews.com> ________________ 9-15-09 In a startling moment of honesty, an FDA spokesperson recently made this announcement: "The FDA obviously has a friendly relationship with drug companies compared to our relatively cool relationship with supplement makers. So of course we're likely to apply more lenient standards to drug companies while pretty much sticking it to supplement companies." I'm actually indulging in some wish fulfillment here -- that statement was never made. Not in so many words, anyway. But if you read between the lines, all is revealed. Let's compare.. EXHIBIT ONE: Free pass for giant drug companies Last month, FDA officials announced a safety information review for orlistat, a weight-loss aid. You probably know this drug by the brand name Alli, made by GlaxoSmithKline. It's also sold at higher dosage as a prescription drug called Xenical, made by Roche. At issue are 32 reports of "serious liver injury," which include six cases of liver failure and 27 cases of hospitalization. The FDA press release states: "FDA is not advising healthcare professionals to change their prescribing practices with orlistat." The agency also advises consumers to continue taking Alli and Xenical as directed. EXHIBIT TWO: Getting tough with a supplement maker This past May, the FDA issued a consumer warning about several (but not all) Hydroxycut weight-loss products. All of these are non-drug items, available over-the-counter. At issue are 23 reports of liver problems, ranging from jaundice and elevated liver enzymes (indicators of potential liver injury) to one death due to liver failure. The FDA warning stated: "The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is warning consumers to immediately stop using Hydroxycut products." There, in a nutshell, is your FDA.
